9 Reasons to do an Engagement Shoot

Hello Bride and Groom

You may have noticed that I, and many other photographers, offer engagement sessions with our packages. You may be thinking, why do I need an engagement session? You may be even thinking “I don’t need an engagement session.” Let me offer a couple of thoughts on the subject.
1It helps your wedding photographs, if you and your wedding photographer are on the same page. A consult is absolutely important to see if your personalities jive, but an engagement shoot allows you and your photographer to see how each works and to fine tune anything before the big day. If you are uncomfortable in front of the camera, this is the perfect opportunity to practice so that on your big day you are comfortable and the photographs reflect that.

Engagement Photography at Beacon Hill Park and the Legislature

Yanni and Amanda chose to do their Love Session at the BC Legislature and Beacon Hill Park. The cherry blossoms were out so the setting was perfect. If you wish to be photographed at the Legislature, at least 10 days notice is needed as a permit is required (no cost for permit).

2These photos are perfect for invitations, and save the date cards/magnets. They can be used on wedding websites that you build to give guests information. You can create a unique guestbook with these images.

Your wedding photos will show you and your partner in all your glory, celebrating your love on a grand scale with family and friends. But your engagement photos will show your love how it exists on a day to day basis. You will be in the clothes that you normally wear and it will just be the two of you, looking forward to a life together. You may even choose a venue for your engagement photos that has a special meaning (and may not fit the 100 guests you will have at your wedding).

7Most importantly, in the grand scheme of your life, your engagement is a short period of time. You dated, then you got engaged and then you get married. Celebrate this short and wonderful time of your relationship. (I know you may have a long engagement — mine was 2 1/2 years — but that is still a short period of time in your life).[/dropcap]

9I call my engagement sessions –  Love Portraits. Why? Because I don’t think that your Engagement and Wedding is the only time you should celebrate your love. Whether you just started dating, or have been married for 25 years, get portraits that celebrate the bond between the two of you.
