9 Reasons to do an Engagement Shoot
Hello Bride and Groom
You may have noticed that I, and many other photographers, offer engagement sessions with our packages. You may be thinking, why do I need an engagement session? You may be even thinking “I don’t need an engagement session.” Let me offer a couple of thoughts on the subject.
1It helps your wedding photographs, if you and your wedding photographer are on the same page. A consult is absolutely important to see if your personalities jive, but an engagement shoot allows you and your photographer to see how each works and to fine tune anything before the big day. If you are uncomfortable in front of the camera, this is the perfect opportunity to practice so that on your big day you are comfortable and the photographs reflect that.
Engagement Photography at Beacon Hill Park and the Legislature
Yanni and Amanda chose to do their Love Session at the BC Legislature and Beacon Hill Park. The cherry blossoms were out so the setting was perfect. If you wish to be photographed at the Legislature, at least 10 days notice is needed as a permit is required (no cost for permit).
2These photos are perfect for invitations, and save the date cards/magnets. They can be used on wedding websites that you build to give guests information. You can create a unique guestbook with these images.
Market Square and the Railroad Tracks Engagement Photos
Krupal and Angelee decided to celebrate their love with some urban portraits at the Railroad tracks in Esquimalt and at Market Square in downtown Victoria. They used these photos for their Save the Date cards (which was needed as they had a 2 day wedding).
Your wedding photos will show you and your partner in all your glory, celebrating your love on a grand scale with family and friends. But your engagement photos will show your love how it exists on a day to day basis. You will be in the clothes that you normally wear and it will just be the two of you, looking forward to a life together. You may even choose a venue for your engagement photos that has a special meaning (and may not fit the 100 guests you will have at your wedding).
Fun Engagement Photos at Swan Lake
Ryan and Megan decided to do their Love Photos at Swan Lake in Victoria, the very spot that Ryan popped the question. Some ducks even crashed the party.
4Get great photos. This is the day and age of the iphone selfie. Why not get some great photos of you and your fiance that you can print and treasure for a lifetime.
Love and Light Session in Downtown Victoria, BC
Aaron and Eve chose to do a Love and Light Session in downtown Victoria, to chose off their beautiful chosen city to family back in Montreal. It also served as a stark difference to their destination wedding in Costa Rica.
5 It’s part of your photography package. Use it! You can also book an engagement shoot to test out a photographer. If you book an engagement shoot and decide to use my services for your wedding, I will discount the cost you spent on the engagement shoot from the package cost (as engagement shoots are included in my packages).
Esquimalt Lagoon Engagement Session
Amber and Derek love the outdoors, so they decided to do their engagement photos with the birds at Esquimalt Lagoon.
6You can get photos showing off your many sided personality. Use props to showcase hobbies and pastimes. How often do we get professional photos taken? You probably haven’t had one done since you graduated.[/dropcap]
Mayfair Mall and Beacon Hill Park Love and Light Session
Val and Kevin are the ultimate urban couple, so they chose to do a gritty Love and Light Session at Mayfair Mall and Beacon Hill Park. It poured on us, but that did not deter us from celebrating their love black and white style.
7Most importantly, in the grand scheme of your life, your engagement is a short period of time. You dated, then you got engaged and then you get married. Celebrate this short and wonderful time of your relationship. (I know you may have a long engagement — mine was 2 1/2 years — but that is still a short period of time in your life).[/dropcap]
Goldstream Love Portraits
Bunny and Joe celebrated their love with a soggy session at Goldstream Park. No rain could stop this romantic photography.
8It’s fun! And who can’t have enough fun in their lives.[/dropcap]
Downtown Victoria Love and Light Photography
Jared and Mariam had a romantic Love and Light Session in downtown Victoria, taking advantage of all the gorgeous lights in the Capital.
9I call my engagement sessions – Love Portraits. Why? Because I don’t think that your Engagement and Wedding is the only time you should celebrate your love. Whether you just started dating, or have been married for 25 years, get portraits that celebrate the bond between the two of you.
Love Portraits at Gowland Tod Park
Justin and Jess aren’t engaged yet… but we celebrated their decade long relationship with some lovely photos at Gowland Tod Park. Their dog even got in on the action.
